The Opportunity We are supporting a defence organisation at the forefront of cyber security research and innovation, seeking a Senior Scientist with strong expertise in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning applied to cyber security.
This is a research-led role, focused on the security of AI/ML systems, exploring emerging threats, developing novel approaches, and shaping future cyber capability. You will work in an environment where problems are genuinely complex and often have no off-the-shelf solutions.
What You'll Be Doing -
Conducting hands-on AI/ML research in cyber security, with particular focus on the security of AI/ML systems
-
Designing and prototyping innovative solutions to emerging cyber threats
-
Translating research into practical outputs, including prototypes, reports, white papers and technical documentation
-
Collaborating with internal cyber teams, industry partners and academic institutions
-
Contributing to horizon scanning, innovation roadmaps and future capability development
-
Supporting knowledge transfer and mentoring activities within the wider team
What We're Looking For Essential:
-
A Master's or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or Cyber Security
-
Strong research background (academic, applied or industrial)
-
Deep understanding of AI/ML algorithms and techniques
-
Strong Python skills for research and prototyping
-
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly
Desirable:
-
Experience applying AI/ML in cyber security contexts

Research into adversarial machine learning, model robustness or AI system security
-
Publications, patents or other research outputs
-
Cyber security certifications or relevant research experience
Why Apply? -
Work on nationally significant cyber challenges
-
Engage in genuine research and innovation, not operational delivery
-
Collaborate with leading experts across government, industry and academia
-
Be part of a long-term programme with strong continuity and impact
