Digital Literacy Instructor

Position Summary:

Digital Literacy Instructors are part of the adulteducation team at Briya Public Charter School - a leading two-generationeducation program serving immigrant parents and their young children inWashington, D.C. Briya is a Tier One Public Charter School, consistentlyachieving the highest educational outcomes through its innovative,family-centric programming.

The core adult education program is comprised of threehighly integrated areas of study: English, parenting, and digital literacy. Thedigital literacy curriculum helps students acquire competency with basicpersonal technology all the way through mastery of more complex tools like the GoogleBusiness suite and video production. Briya also offers workforce developmentprograms for advanced students who wish to pursue career-ready certifications.

Briya has a strategic partnership with Mary'sCenter, a Federally Qualified Health Center, further strengthening studentfamilies with comprehensive medical, dental, and social services.

Digital Literacy Instructors are classroomteachers, technology integrators, and community builders. The Digital LiteracyInstructor position may include, but is not limited to, the following tasks andresponsibilities:

Essential Duties& Responsibilities:

Planning

. Collaborate withother instructors and coordinators to develop daily technology lesson plansthat integrate components of ESL and parenting. Plans will follow best practicesin instructional design by including clear objectives, instructional activitieswith differentiated instruction, and assessments that are appropriate to theskill level, needs, and interests of the students in the program.

. Following theTechnology Standards & Curriculum, ensure coursework supports acquisitionof basic skills such as typing and mouse skills, utilizing diverse technologyplatforms including computers, tablets, and educational software. Computerclasses must cover introductory use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,PowerPoint), Windows, Google Apps for Education, Internet, and E-mail.

. Incorporate avariety of technologies into instruction including technologies used in worksettings, such as photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines; and technologiesused in personal settings such as tablets, cell phone/telephone applications (egvoicemail, texting, camera, and videos), and digital/video cameras.

. Design authenticlearning experiences that develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudesnecessary to be effective workers, parents/family members, and communitymembers/citizens.

Teaching

. Teach dailydigital literacy and practical technology classes.

. Providequality instruction that fosters an academic learning climate, activelysupports teaching and learning, and implements the Technology Standards &Curriculum with fidelity.

. Supportimplementation of the ESL and Parenting/PACT curricula within the digitalliteracy classroom. This curriculum focuses on working with families toidentify their strengths and provides strategies to reach their goals. Thecurriculum also encourages parent participation in their children's education.

. Utilizeeffective teaching strategies that provide opportunities for student learning andactive engagement in the learning process. Meet the needs of students at riskof academic failure or students not making reasonable progress toward achievingschool and personal goals; this may include one-on-one support, pull-outclasses in other languages, and referrals to Student Services.

. Provide a safeand orderly learning environment in the classroom.

ComputerLab

. Maintain thecomputer labs and an inventory of information and technology equipment(hardware and software) in partnership with the IT site technician; tasksinclude storage, maintenance, and charging of student laptops and management ofprinting supplies for student projects.

StudentSupport & Other Duties

. Provide information and referrals for families regardingsocial, health, legal, and educational resources and opportunities available in the area. Refer students to StudentServices Coordinator as needed.

. Assist withstudent recruitment, student registrations, and special events such asgraduation and other school-based celebrations.

. Participate inall required staff meetings, trainings, and retreats.

Qualifications:

Digital LiteracyInstructors must have the following knowledge, skills and/or abilities.

Education and/or Experience

. Bachelor's degreepreferred.

. Teaching experiencewith low-literacy adult language learners preferred.

. Excellentcommunication skills in English required and Spanish preferred. Amharic,Tigrinya, French, and/or Arabic also highly valued.

. Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.

ReasoningAbility - Ability to applycommon sense understanding to carry out moderately complex, multi-stepinstructions and make appropriate independent decisions as necessary.

ClassroomTechnology - Comfortwith, or ability to learn, Windows 10 OS, Smart Notebook and Smart Board,Document Camera, Lenovo Laptops, iPads, Google Apps for Education, and Wix(Website Editor). Online learning applications include, but are not limited to,Kahoot, Quizlet, EdPuzzle, Digital Stories, and Google Classroom.

PhysicalDemands - Regularly requiredstanding, walking, and sitting, sometimes for many hours at a time; frequentlyrequired to reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk orhear; must be able to lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made toenable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

WorkEnvironment- Mostly in a typical classroom or office setting with quiet to moderate noiselevel. Enrollment at Briya PCS is typically between 20-40 students per class.
